some responses

  1. ……… regarding choosing a script for badaga… I am researching in this field to choose a right script for this beautiful language… and this is the right time to develop more literary works in badaga… for me I think choosing the tamil script with little modification may develop badaga language very much… it is true tamil language has no separate script to denote GA sound and Dha but using diacratic symbols below tamil Ka and tamil Tha can be taken as separate script…

    I do agree with Arunan…

Tamil Script can be used with additional scripts for some letters (such Additional letters can be made simple by using Malayalam letters ).

By the way, the generation can be enriched by using the state lanugage but at the same time can develop their literatures soon.

Konkani till now in a dispute to follow a new script….have not developed yet.

But If Badaga can use Tamil, sure Tamil Nadu Government related subsidy can be brought by using MLAs and MPs from Ooty.

Use of Tamil script will alienate a huge chunk of us who only read and write English and Hindi. Most folk who know Tamil can read and write English as the above comments reveal!. Do not search for subsidies and politize these issues. Be Global, so many foreigners can learn the language if the script is in English!. Do not limit yourself!

I have been living in Bangalore and realise that Badaga is very muh similar to Kannada. I strogly fell we can use Kannada script as all the words of Badaga can written clearly in Kannada script. Similar example is Konkani using Marathi script as both the languages are alike. I feel this is the appropriate solution.

Hi am ASHA ,when I saw this site I was really suprised. Appara santhoshava adathae , ithava onthu arputhavana language ga script ila yenthu nenachuvanae kashtava attuthu but now I am very confident that we will have our own scripts within a short period. Am ready to do my best for your organisation. Am very honored to say this “U GUYZ SIMPLY ROCK” and of course we will rock.Keep going………. BEST WISHES.

Thank you Asha, though I have mentioned it many times, let me repeat it again. THIS WEBSITE IS AN ONE MAN EFFORT. But I am humbled to see such praise being showered. As far as how you can help out – here is a simple thought. I have seen many parents [including me, having a son and daughter ] to find suitable matches. Though there are a lot of nice looking, educated and eligible brides and grooms, somehow, it does not result in marriages. Since I am of the strong view that for Badaga culture and traditions to survive, Badagas should marry among themselves. Why there is such a low response to my offer of hosting FREE matrimonial alliances is a mystery to me. May be people like you can tell me the real apprehensions. Another way you can help out is by creating awareness about the book on Badagas by Balasubramaniam which has high lighted our community in a highly positive note. Thanks once again – Wg Cdr JP

I have moved to Canada, but I have keen interest in developing the script for Badaga language. Modified Tamil script can be taken as Badaga script, so that we can start a news paper and publishing house, so that we can print more books on Badaga language. Friends, share your views for a joint work.Is there any publication in Badaga language? All badugas should join in hands to carry a new era.

JP adds : Thank you Eezham Thamizhan Arunan, we appreciate your sentiments

    http://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wp/bfq/Main_Page

This series of pages is for a test-wikipedia in Badaga. Your Badaga input here will be appreciated. The request for the creation of the Badaga Wikipedia will be approved if and when there is sufficient article content. When it is approved, all content here would be moved to the actual Wikipedia. Because this is a test-wikipedia all articles here must begin with the format Wp/bfq/Name of article. For example, an article about Nilgiris should be titled here as Wp/bfq/Niligiris. (Of course in the actual wikipedia, the article would be titled as Niligiris). This is the main page for wiki badaga proposal… please have a look. if any thing wrong please forgive me and you can edit that or let me know.. I ll edit that content……

Badaga speakers are encouraged to create as many top-quality articles as possible. This test page needs to be translated into Badaga.

  2. I am very proud to be a Badaga. I felt very happy seeing so many responses and interests in creating a Badaga script. I have studied mostly in north so Hindi was my second language in school. I used to write Badaga in Hindi as I felt more comfortable in Hindi than English as Hindi words’ pronunciation is apt and better compared to both English and Tamil. I have learnt Tamil script also and feel Hindi is better because, for example, letters for ‘ka’ and ‘Ga’ are same in Tamil but different in Hindi and letters for ‘ta’ and ’tha’ are different in Hindi, similarly all letters like that, which is not differentiated in Tamil. Majority of Badaga people know Tamil and adjusting to a similar script ,rather learning a totally new language, is much better, so it is good that Badaga script similar to Tamil is being developed but the deficient facts in Tamil which I expressed compared to Hindi must be met in Tamil developing Badaga
I had met one Badaga family and when I asked the kids, who were about 10yrs old, “suddi? Olanga iddiya?” they didn’t answer and were looking at me as if I had spoken to them in alien language. Many parents don’t encourage their kids to talk in Badaga considering the fact that Badaga won’t assist them in education, which shouldn’t be considered at all in terms of mother tongue.
I have one wish! When I was studying in KV,CBSE syllabus, we had Sanskrit as our 3rd language(after English and Hindi) for about 3years from 5th to 8th though Sanskrit is not used nowadays. It is kept in such standards that won’t affect the important standard marks, which will judge our college life. Why not keep Badaga as the 3rd language for Tamil Nadu state board schools, only Nilgiri schools and in only one primary standard, since it won’t be as vast as Sanskrit, after the Badaga script is developed.

  3. I am sorry for pointing those defects in Tamil which is already done. I saw them in articles only now. Very happy that so much is advanced in Badaga script. But please include my suggestion of including Badaga as 3rd language in school in any one primary section.

  4. Since Badaga language is almost 90% Kannada, it seems logical that a variant of the Kannada script be used. Tamil can also be used as Tamil also belongs to the Southern Dravidian language family as Badaga and Kannada. But English belongs to a different language family altogether. Kannada, Tamil and even, Telugu, are more closer to Badaga than Malayalam. Also, there are practically no advantages in using Malayalam script. So that option maybe ruled out.

  5. BADAGA SCRIPT is one of part of Tamil language...Tamil, because many Badagas are literate in Tamil English, this is a popular second language taught in schools; and Kannada, as Badaga is very closely related to Kannada.
